In the year 2009, as we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Ballets Russes, it is wonderful to find this delightful ballet company in Boston. “Ben’s Trumpet” is a real story, with a soundtrack of tunes from the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald Billie Holiday, Bessie Smith, and Louis Armstrong. Costumes, set design, and dance all create a charming scene of Harlem Renaissance-era clubs and street corners. “Peter and the Wolf” is narrated by Leonard Bernstein - very useful for those of us who may have forgotten the story - and modern children will probably not be too upset by the foolish duck’s untimely end. The opening ballet, “La Favorita” is a lovely classical piece which allows BalletRox to show off its polish. This show is a must for balletomanes and indeed for anyone who enjoys supporting the arts in Boston.
Wheelock Family Theatre always hopes to engage in a lively dialogue. All voices make up our varied and colorful family and free speech is a cherished right. While critical analysis is welcome, and indeed, anticipated; discriminatory or hateful language will not be tolerated.
