Hello WFT Families !

The Phantom Tollbooth is up and running for a few more weeks. I had the pleasure of serving as the assistant to director Jane Staab on this production - so I thought that I would share a behind the scenes account of the . . .

Top Ten Things I Love About The Phantom Tollbooth

(in no particular order)

1. Jeffrey Michael Sewell as Milo - this young actor is so professional to work with, and so mesmerizing to watch.

2. Choreography by Laurel Conrad. The Phantom Tollbooth has a lot of movement, dance and general silliness, and Laurel's visions kept all of our actors on their toes, literally!

3. Set Design by Matthew Lazure. So many colors! So many numbers! So many moving pieces!

4. The Lethargarians - what's that you say? You don't know what a Lethargarian is yet? ! Then, you must run run run to the box office to get your tickets! (Though the Lethargarians would never do the same!) These lazy, dazy creatures live in the Doldrums, and try to keep Milo - and all of us - down!

5. The Dodecahedron played by Ceit Zweil. This 12-faced lady is one of the gems of Digitopolis, and takes the audience through a journey in the Numbers Mine. That's right, the numbers MINE. Where did you think numbers came from?

6. Tock the dog played by the gorgeously talented Michael Wood. Tock is The Watchdog in The Phantom Tollbooth, but he is really much more of a lover than a fighter. He is the most loyal dog, and Michael Wood mesmerizes the audience with his dog-like movements.

7. The Princesses of Rhyme and Reason. We all need a healthy dose of these two ideas . . . err . . . characters in our lives.

8. Costumes by Lisa Simpson. Gorgeous! Beautiful! Glittery! Lisa's every fabric choice and color palette are spot-on for the characters. The stage pictures she creates are amazing.

9. The two Princes of Digitopolis and Dictionopolis - so witty and powerful in their wielding of words and numbers.

10. The last best thing I like about The Phantom Tollbooth is that it is open until November 20th! Get your tickets today!

PHANTOM TOLLBOOTH is opening Friday!

We are so very excited about “The Phantom Tollbooth” being our first show of the season at Wheelock Family Theatre!

Jeffrey Sewell is playing the young Milo, bored with life to the point of lethargy, and Michael Wood plays the guiding Tock, a dog with a clock on his tummy!
Together, the duo seek the way to The Castle in the Air, where they hope to find the Princesses of Rhyme and Reason, reunite the kingdoms of Digitopolis and Dictionopolis, all the while chased down by the Demons of Insincerity and Lethargy, the Spelling Bee, the Humbug and the Dodecahedron, too!

In his magic car, and through his mysterious tollbooth, can Milo discover that there is anything that matters, at all?

I for one, can’t wait to find out!

11:30: Once On This Island, Jr. - Two songs: “Waiting for Life”, “Ti Moune”

The Advanced Student Performance Intensive, directed by Ilyse Robbins and John O’Neil, provided an opportunity for youngsters with stage experience to perform Once on this Island, Jr. on August 12.

11:45: Barnyard Dance with the Wheelock Family Theatre Story Troupers

Story Troupers, directed by Grace Napier and Sophie Rich, is a select ensemble of teen-age actors that have rehearsed an original show based on children’s stories with poems, music, and dance. Barnyard Dance includes: The Three Little Pigs Rap, The Chicken-Chasing Queen of Lamar County, Sheep Out to Eat, Pigsty, Guji Guji, Hen Hears Gossip, and Clorinda.

SPECIAL GUESTS:

12.30: National Braille Press Children’s Story Circle

National Braille Press (NBP) is a non-profit braille publisher dedicated to promoting literacy for blind children. Located at 88 Saint Stephen Street in the Fenway neighborhood, NBP has been producing braille books and educational materials since 1927. We also offer programs like the Children’s Braille Book Club that features print/braille storybooks that promote the joy of reading between parents and children – whether it is a sighted parent of a blind child or a blind parent with a sighted child. Come and hear popular children’s stories read in the print/braille format by a blind and a sighted storyteller.

How many different ways do you already move? This class makes students aware of their own movement vocabulary and then adds to it with many new ways of moving!
CREATIVE DRAMATICS: THE MAGIC OF STORIES

This class focuses on dramatizing children’s literature. Students will bring simple, clear stories to the stage, and connect to WFT’s The Phantom Tollbooth. First and foremost, the goal is to have fun!

This drama class is dedicated to accommodating the needs of children with Asperger’s Syndrome and related challenges. Using a peer partner model, students are asked to invite a similarly-aged friend, with whom they have a positive connection, to join them in class for each session. Together, we will explore movement vocabulary, spatial awareness and acting fundamentals through the dramatization of stories.

Jeffrey Sewell Was “Born This Way”

We all hear of people that put crazy stuff up on YouTube and all of the sudden, they are famous. Well so is the story with one of our own star students, Jeffrey Sewell, who posted his cover from Legally Blond which quickly got more than 90,000 hits on YouTube, and was the “talk of Times Square.”

Soon, Jeffrey was invited to sing in New York at Joe's Pub with Trapper Felides and company! Check out the video above – It will make your day!

This fall, you can see Jeffrey star at Milo in Wheelock Family Theatre’s The Phantom Tollbooth !

Long time, no post, faithful readers. My apologies. I was very busy last week teaching the 6-8 year olds at our youngest Drama Intensive this April! We had thirty little ones, 3 teachers, 2 assistants, lots of hats, and a crazy time.

We focused our intensive with the 6-8 year old age group on the following:

Movement using the Laban Technique
Costuming to show character, especially COLOR and TEXTURE
Tableau or the use of frozen images onstage to tell a story.

This summer we have a million classes offered (well, not a million, but many choices!!!) and frankly, I can’t decide what class I want to teach the most!

WFT Artist Profile: Cyrus Veyssi!

Cyrus S. Veyssi is performing as a Slave of the Ring in this season’s production of Aladdin at WFT. He is from Brookline, Massachusetts and pleased to be in a play that is so close to home. He attends the Noble and Greenough School, where he is in the 10th grade. Here’s a note from Cyrus, himself!

Hi! I'm Cyrus Veyssi. I'm 16 years old and I'm in tenth grade at the Noble and Greenough School in Dedham. Even though i was born in Brookline,my parents are both from Iran and they decided to move to Paris, then Boston after the revolution [in Iran]. I've been singing for most of my life. I started humming tunes since i was like one and i watch home videos of me sometimes to see what i was singing or what noises i was making.

I sang in my old schools choir and am currently singing at my high school and taking voice lessons in Cambridge. I LOVE acting. The first acting job I auditioned for was a show for WGBH called “Giggle.” Even though the show never aired, we filmed the pilot over a weekend and i got to experience my first acting role.

I then began to act in Jamaica Plain with the Footlight Troop for a few years. I played roles such as Odysseus in “Mything Links” and other roles in plays such as the “Tortoise and the Hare.” In my old school's production of “Finnian's Rainbow,” i played the lead role, Woody. After i left my old School, the Park school, and came to Nobles, I played the character “Itys” as an eighth grader in “The Love of the Nightingale,” the high school's production. I then acted in Batboy the musical and recently had various roles in Metamorphosis, adapted by Mary Zimmerman.

I act, sing, and try to maintain a fit lifestyle, playing sports like tennis and squash.

I personally cannot wait for spring vacation and summer camps and intensives at WFT! I have had the pleasure of teaching with WFT since 2005, and of all the theatres I have worked for, it is by far my favorite. There is a reason why teachers and students come back to WFT year after year, and it’s not the glam of performances! It’s the connections made with other artists, with our community, and even within ourselves.

Instructor: Robin Connors. Students will explore the roots and varieties of modern street dance, including hip-hop, jazz and more.

Weds.4/27-5/25, 4-6pm.

Instructor: Danny Bolton. How do I select a good monologue for myself? How can I prepare for a cold reading? These and other essential elements of successful auditioning will be the focus of this class.

Acting for Commercials,

Mons. 4/25-5/23, 4-6pm.

Instructor: M. Lynda Robinson. This class for youth and teens will look at the particular challenges of selling a product on-camera. Attention will also be given to creating compelling head shots and resumes, as well as appropriate etiquette and wardrobe for professional auditions.

Wheelock Family Theatre's education program is sustained by both a professional theatre staff and an institution of higher learning, Wheelock College.

The result is a dynamic and exciting drama curriculum for youngsters between the ages of 6 and 17 that teaches drama skills AND connects those skills to child development theory and practice.

WFT educators create challenging drama and movement games, improvisations, and exercises that help youngsters learn not just the HOW but also the WHY of onstage thoughts, feelings, and actions.

WFT designs a scope-and-sequence of class offerings within each age group so that students are consistently asked to build upon what came before. Experienced students can then audition for Wheelock Family Theatre's advanced performance programs and mainstage productions.

Join Wheelock College President Jackie Jenkins-Scott and the Advisory Board of Wheelock Family Theatre on Saturday, May 14, 2011, at the WHEEL Award dinner to honor the work and achievements of three remarkable women. The WHEEL Award, established in 2002, recognizes individuals who believe the arts can transform lives. These individuals share Wheelock Family Theatre’s commitment to children and families and dedicate their work to making a difference.

This year’s WHEEL Award 2011 honorees are Kate Taylor, Janice Allen, and Victoria Rowell. These three inspiring women, each with her own moving story, remind us all how important it is to reach out to the youth of our communities.

Kate Taylor – Trained in curriculum development and as a classroom teacher, Kate used her special interest in the sciences to produce several educational television series for children. She has developed several programs at WGBH, Boston’s public television station, and has been a leader in her field for over 20 years. She has been involved in projects such as Zoom, Arthur, Design Squad, Degrassi Junior High, and another Peabody award winner, Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? She is currently Senior Executive Producer of Children’s Programming at WGBH and has recently produced FETCH! With Ruff Ruffman and PEEP and the Big Wide World, both funded by The National Science Foundation and recipients of numerous awards, including the Emmy Award.

Victoria Rowell – Victoria started her career as a dancer, working with several companies including The American Ballet Theater and the Twyla Tharp Workshop. She has been featured on the covers of Seventeen and Mademoiselle magazines as a result of her work in modeling. She has been a regular on The Young and The Restless as Drucilla Winters and worked on Diagnosis Murder for eight seasons. Along with her success as a dancer, model, and actress, she has become an advocate for foster children. Growing up, Victoria Rowell spent 18 years in foster care and has written the New York Times Bestseller and literary award winner “The Women Who Raised Me”, published by William Morrow, about her experience growing up. Victoria also founded the Rowell Foster Children’s Positive Plan in 1990 to enrich the lives of foster children through artistic and athletic expression.

Janice Allen – Janice teaches songs, dance, and history from the African and African-American culture. Much of the music is from the Georgia and Carolina Sea Islands. Called "One of New England's most popular children's performers" by the Boston Globe, Janice Allen has toured nationally and made frequent concert appearances in Africa and Japan. Janice Allen conducted the Boston children's choir that was featured at the Nelson Mandela Celebration at Boston Esplanade Hatch pavilion before a live audience of over 200,000 people and a national television audience. She is winner of the 1989 Boston Parent's Paper Children's Entertainer of the Year award and has performed in lead roles in “Black Nativity,” Revels, and the Wheelock Family Theatre musical “Sound of Music.”

All proceeds from The WHEEL Award celebration will benefit the educational and artistic programs at Wheelock Family Theatre.

An Evening with Jacques d'Amboise

With the publication of his autobiographical memoir, "I Was a Dancer", Jacques d'Amboise returns to Wheelock Family Theatre for an intimate evening with fans, friends, patrons, and dance lovers.
Recognized as one of the finest classical dancers of our time, Jacques d'Amboise now leads the field of arts education with a model program that exposes thousands of school children to the magic and discipline of dance. In 1976, while still a principal dancer at the New York City Ballet, Mr. d'Amboise founded National Dance Institute in the belief that the arts have a unique power to engage and motivate individuals towards excellence.
Jaques d'Amboise's work in dance education has taken him all over the world—from the extremes of Yakutsk, Siberia, to the Danakil Desert in Ethiopia, from 13,000 feet below sea level at the Dead Sea to the mountains of Nepal, and from the dryness of the Atacama Desert in Chile to rainforests on the island of Kauai in the Hawaiian Chain. Since 1976, NDI programs in New York City and its associate programs, both nationally and internationally, have reached and influenced over 2 million children.

Looking for a hidden gem in your own backyard? Look no further than Boston’s own Wheelock Family Theatre which is currently producing THE SECRET GARDEN.

THE SECRET GARDEN, based on the book by Frances Hodgson Burnett, is a young girl’s struggle to acclimatize to her new surroundings. It’s a tale of the ebb and flow of life, renewal and growth, and the seed of hope and change that lies deep within all of us. Wheelock took Burnett's book and has adapted it for their young audience. Oh, so they dumbed it down, you say? No! With new book and lyrics by Susan Kosoff and original music by Jane Staff, THE SECRET GARDEN is streamlined, straightforward, and suddenly accessible. My 5 year old sat mesmerized for over two hours!

Mary Lennox (Katherine Leigh Doherty) arrives from India to live in the English countryside after the tragic death of her parents. Besides the obvious lack of sun, there is also a severe lack of humor and fun. There are no jump ropes, toys, or anything to keep a young girl’s attention or her spirits up. Despondent and aloof, Mary finally lets her guard and class consciousness down and befriends a rough-n-tumble groundskeeper named Ben Weatherstaff (Neil Gustafson), the ever affable housemaid Martha Sowerby (Jennifer Beth Glick), her adventurous son Dickon (Andrew Barbato), as well as a very smart robin. The robin guides her to a neglected garden. This tiny enclosed plot is alive with the memory of her aunt’s tragic death and thick undergrowth. It’s nothing that a little hard work and sweat can’t fix as Dickon and Mary work to make it a magical and happy place again. But shhhhhhh…….it’s their secret. Before long though, her sickly cousin, Master Colin Craven (Ellis Gage), is in on the fun too. He, like everyone else, re-energizes to the possibilities that life has to offer. The actors, especially Doherty, keep the story moving forward with conviction. Standout singing by Gustafson, Glick, and Gage in “Tha’ an’ Me Are Alike,” “But for the Garden,” as well as “If You Are Ill,” catapults this production upward.

Helping to provide this metamorphosis visually is the clever set design by Matthew T. Lazure. The wall to the garden rotates and you are truly surprised when an upstairs room reveals itself after Mary “discovers” the cloistered Colin. With the help of musical director and orchestrator, Jonathon Goldberg, Jane Staab’s beautiful songs blossom onstage. It’s a group effort that pays off.

With THE SECRET GARDEN, spring has finally come to Boston. This production runs until February 27. Go see it and be transformed!

The Secret Garden :: EDGE Boston reviews the show and loves it! Congratulations to the design staff in particular!

“[Matthew T.] Lazure effectively creates the panorama of the bleak manor with its long corridors off which there are many rooms, including the sick room of the willful Colin. Lazure also creatively suggests the outside of the estate property with its formal gardens in which another garden is hidden behind a high stonewall whose gateway is covered with vines.

The first-rate costumer Stacey Stephens has dressed them all with flair. And the talented Goldberg, at the keyboards, doubles as orchestrator and music director, conducting a capable 4-piece ensemble in a lyrical score comprised of much sung dialogue and songs that approach operatic arias in stature.”

The Secret Garden continues through February 27, 2011 at the Wheelock Family Theatre, 200 The Riverway, Boston. Performances are Fri. nights at 7:30 with Sat. and Sun.matinees at three. There are also school vacation week matinees at one, Feb. 22-25. More info on-line at tickets@wheelock.edu.

So I’m live here at WFT and we have just started the run. I have to say, the beginning is just plain … spooky. Mary comes all the way from India to the house of her Uncle to stay, it is rainy, cold and dreary. Like any precocious young lass, she immediately begins to complain, singing , “No, I don’t like it!” which is the mindset of too too many little girls in new experiences. Though . . . you really can’t help but agree with her – this house (the set) looks absolutely cold-hearted and I might even say just plain cold – shivering, wet, brrrr cold. Olde English Country charm turned heartless and sad.

This is a photo from a different time in the show, but I think it really shows the beautiful set design and mood of the first act.

I wonder where the story will progress

One thing that is universal about tech rehearsals is that they seem stressful, even though they aren’t always actually stressful. That sounds odd, but here a few things that you must have to get a dress rehearsal accomplished: Yelling; Stopping; Starting; Repeating; Directing; Disagreeing; and Repeating; and also Repeating. If you’re not used to it, it can seem like there is too much going on and too many people thinking that their job is the most important – but aha! – that is the brilliance of it. The Director, the Music Director, the Sound Designer, the backstage costume Dresser, and the Actors all have a job to do and they're all correct, their job is the most important – and it’s all these micro-battles during Tech and the respect that theatre artists have for each other and the work, that makes the Dress Rehearsal and ultimately, the Opening Night so tightly and wonderfully successful.

Theatre & Young People: Advice for All: PART THREE

This is the third part of a three-part posting that we are doing to discuss our philosophy at WFT for working with young people. If you missed the first two entries, read them below! bp

Advice for Parents

You are an essential part of your child’s acting experience: without your whole-hearted collaboration it wouldn’t even happen. As you consider or continue this involvement, the following suggestions may be useful.

Make sure that your child really wants to do it. Your enthusiastic support of your child’s interests is essential as well -- and this may involve time, money, and a flexible work schedule for at least one adult in your household. But do be certain that the initial impetus comes from your child.

Training is essential. Encourage your child to take basic skills classes which are focused on the process rather than the product. No matter where your child’s interests ultimately lie, these opportunities will enrich his or her life.

Develop realistic expectations. Remember that very few people get work in professional theatre. Always reinforce the idea that each part of the experience is worthwhile in and of itself. Be particularly sensitive to the emotional hotbed of auditions. Young people vary as widely as do adults in their ability to be philosophical about rejection. Help your child to see auditions as educational, entertaining, and worthwhile events, no matter how they turn out. Your responses to the casting process are an example to your child. Be there to support, sympathize, encourage. Try not to get super-invested in the results.

Academics and theatre do mix. In our experience, young people generally do better in school while they are involved in a production. And, more often than not, teachers and school administrators are more than willing to help make creative arrangements -- which should be discussed well in advance -- when performances conflict with the school day. If you do encounter resistance, talk with teachers about the educational opportunities offered by the work. Suggest that your family document the experience in some way to share with classmates. Be sure that your child can follow through on make-up assignments.

Debunk the old stage-parent myth. Groundless though it may be, the stage-mother archetype lurks nightmarishly in the wings of many a producer and director’s imagination. It doesn’t take much to transcend this stereotype. Be relaxed and professional and never interfere with production routines. Find out to whom you should voice concerns -- the stage manager, perhaps, or a production assistant -- and always go through channels. Be friendly, interested, responsible, and never pushy. Advocate for your child when necessary, attend to business arrangements by all means, but encourage your child to communicate directly with production staff. After all, your child is the one who was cast. Don’t hover. But remember, you are the prime mover, the transportation, and the organizer. Without you, the director would not have the benefit of your child’s talent.

Other Issues

Unless a young person is working for pay, no particular financial or legal complications will arise. A few general pointers concerning salaried work follow.

Portfolio and headshot photography, multiple wardrobes, inclusion in a model agent’s book, resume preparation, legal and professional fees, classes, and so forth will cost hundreds of dollars -- at least. Unless a young person works enough to become a business of his own, these expenses are not tax deductible

In order to work, young people need a Social Security number and must file W-4 forms with each one of their employers.

Massachusetts has a Child Labor Law which makes particular requirements of employers who offer entertainment contracts to minors. Speak with an agent or the production company or theatre involved about their compliance with these laws.

Young people under the age of 16 may need a work permit, usually available from the local public school superintendent.

Young people under the age of 14, who have their Equity cards, may work in an Equity theatre as non-union actors.

Seek the advice of accountants and/or attorneys who specialize in the performing arts for details on tax issues or before signing long-term or exclusive contracts for minors, whether with agents, managers, or producers.

AFTRA/SAG publishes an excellent guide called The AFTRA/SAG Young Performers Handbook, which is recommended for further information about film and television work. It is available to members only through the AFTRA/SAG office at (617) 742-2688.

Advice for Directors
We suspect that there are directors out there who harbor secret fears about working with young people. We’d like to assure you that those fears are groundless. Young people can take direction well. They are, for the most part, energetic, malleable, eager to please, able to feel deeply and to act naturally.
If there is a secret to successful work with young people, it is embarrassingly simple: what is effective when you direct adults will be effective when you direct young people. Be supportive and clear. Establish explicit expectations. Recognize successful moments with an enthusiastic, positive response. Recognize less successful moments with a measured and specific response. Resist the urge to yell.
Beyond what every good director already knows, the following few truths -- less immediately apparent and frequently ignored -- may be of use in working with young people.
Trust young people to get where they need to go on their own. There is really no need for actors to escort them about onstage as if they were prisoners plotting an escape. Once young people know what they are expected to do and when and why, they are perfectly capable of doing it.
Provide strong staging. Young people -- particularly those with minimal experience -- should not be expected to stage themselves. They will need your help in developing motivation, movement, and characteristic gestures.
Take advantage of their energy. The more young people have to do onstage, the better. Keeping them busy helps to keep them focused.
Don’t over-rehearse. The freshest performances can rapidly go stale if most young people are required to conform to an adult’s rehearsal schedule. Work with them in relatively brief, but frequent enough, sessions.
Hold them to a high standard. Young people don’t need coddling, but sometimes they do need coaching. Help them to shed “performy” habits and to see themselves as professionals. Your high expectations will frequently be rewarded with extraordinary performances.

Since it’s about that time to start thinking of spring break and summer classes for young people, I know a lot of you readers may be considering enrolling yourself or your child in a class at WFT. Here are some of our thoughts on working with young people in theatre, which really speak to our philosophy at WFT. Young People & Theatre: Advice for All- PART ONE by WFT
The theatre experience is a wonderful experience, whether or not you even choose it as a career. If you are thinking about making theatre your profession, here are a few points you will need to consider.

Training is essential. Before you take the plunge into performing, take at least one class in creative drama, improvisation, or acting. Even if you’ve been onstage before, chances are there is still a great deal for you to learn about the process of becoming an actor. And keep taking classes. Professional actors who have been working for years continue to refine their craft in this way.

Be prepared at your audition. Have a picture and resume ready, even it they are not professionally done. Find out ahead of time what is expected of you at the audition. If it is a prepared piece, have it memorized, staged, and rehearsed. Be sure it is within the time limit allowed. If you are singing, find out in advance if there is an accompanist and bring sheet music. (Although it may be necessary, it is not wise to sing a capella.)

Be prepared for rejection. With hundreds of people competing for the same role, every actor must be prepared for the inevitable: more often than not you will not get the part. Don’t let rejection get you down -- and don’t give up! Take workshops or get coaching to improve your audition skills, do the best you can, but realize that some factors (your size, your height, your hair color, the director’s vision) are beyond your control.

Take your work seriously. Learn your lines. Do the research involved in developing your character. Prepare as carefully and rigorously as you do for a demanding subject at school. Work hard, honor your commitments, treat others with respect -- and have fun. Resist the notion that you are always the center of attention, but always believe that you have the attention of your audience whenever you step onto the stage.

Be punctual. Whether it’s for a class, an audition, a rehearsal, or a performance, show up early if you can, but absolutely no later than the time you’re expected to arrive. It’s unprofessional to keep a classroom -- or an entire theatre -- full of people waiting.

Stay focused. Know when to be playful and when to be quiet: both will be required of you at different times. Complete focus is always critical during performances. Stay in character and never let your mind wander -- even when something goes wrong on stage.

Respect your role in the play, no matter the size. Maybe your part is small, maybe it’s not. Every role is crucial to the success of the production.

Be a good apprentice. Take advantage of every chance you get to learn from experienced actors. Use your off-stage time well: observe the professional actor at work.

The big question I always come up to when I'm picking a production to see, and there is play, a musical and a dance to choose from, is:

Why Go to the Ballet?

And truthfully, sometimes I can't remember. I let my own mind give in to some of the stereotypes about ballet, which I won't list here. After seeing Urban Nutcracker, however, I remembered

The Reasons We Love Ballet

1. It is unabashedly magical.

2. It is one of the rare opportunities we have to experience something purely beautiful, without masking that beauty in an overly-intellectual or verbal narrative.

3. It is an art form that goes beyond merely exploring emotions, and is actually the celebration of non-verbal emotions.

4. It is awe-inspiring to see men and women leap through the air using only their own strength.

5. Ballet dancers are pretty or handsome! :)

I hope that you take the opportunity to see Urban Nutcracker this weekend -- the last weekend of the season. Your children will love the magic, glitter and beauty, and you will love the peaceful sense you get watching a child experience a piece of true art.

The magical time of year has come again, with or without Santa . . .

It’s time to sign up for winter classes and workshops!! Wheelock Family Theatre provides a dynamic and exciting drama curriculum for young actors (ages 6–17) that teaches drama skills while connecting those skills to your child's overall development.

CLASSES & WORKSHOPS

Wheelock Family Theatre is the only theatre in New England with an education program sustained by both a professional theatre staff and an institution of higher learning, Wheelock College. The result is a dynamic and exciting drama curriculum that teaches drama skills and connects those skills to child development theory and practice.

Theatre artist-educators at WFT create challenging drama and movement games, improvisations, and exercises that help kids learn not just the HOW but also the WHY of onstage thoughts, feelings, and actions.

We do our best to make all our classes accessible in every sense of the word: welcoming and celebrating differences, adapting to various learning styles, and challenging veterans and newcomers alike. While we encourage students to repeat classes, particularly at the youngest, creative dramatics level, we also thoughtfully design a scope-and-sequence of class offerings within each age group so that students are consistently asked to build upon what came before. Early creative dramatics classes lead to introductory acting, movement, and improvisation classes, then to specialty classes such as musical theatre, stage combat, and scene work. Experienced students can then audition for Wheelock Family Theatre's advanced performance programs and mainstage productions.

‘Nutcracker’ with a twist

DANCE REVIEW: 'Urban Nutcracker' gives Tchaikovsky some street cred

Read this wonderful article above, out of the Patriot Ledger. Here is my favorite quote

“The characters are from the here and now, rather than long ago and far away in some middle-European city. You have to look hard for the traditional pastel costumes of the original work because the people onstage in “Urban Nutcracker” wear hoodies and jeans as often as tutus and tights, while many of the large number of children have sneakers on their feet instead of ballet slippers.” –Iris Fanger

This is exactly what I enjoyed about the Urban Nutcracker. The dance piece as whole seeks to attract and entertain all children- not just little ballerinas, or little girls who like to dress up, or moms who used to dance – this piece is for everyone, EVERYONE! (Written as a former little ballerina / little girl who still likes to dress up and future mom).

The costumes, varied from a traditional Sugar Plum Fairy "getup," to hooded sweatshirts, loud high-tops that look unlaced, and loud crazy colors – gave me the feeling that I could go up onstage in my own street-wear and jump right in. Thankfully for the Ballet Rox company, I held my seat.

So I survived yet another WFT event where I did not, in fact, go up onstage and embarrass myself and maybe ruin the show – here’s hopin’ for next time!

After the death of his fiancée's daughter while in his care, Andrew (Anthony Natale), a Deaf artist, becomes a prisoner of his own mind. Tormented day and night by memories and self-blame, Andrew falls in a downward spiral of depression and anger that alienates everyone around him. It is only through a serendipitous friendship and new love with Mary (Sabrina Lloyd) that Andrew is able to sense the life around him - forgive himself, rediscover his muse, and experience the transformative power of love.

“Annie” Opening is Tonight!!

I scoped out the Final Dress Rehearsal and my investigation led me to create this mysterious list so that I do not ruin any surprises!

TOP FIVE THINGS THAT I LOVED OR HATED* ABOUT “ANNIE”

(and by ‘hated,’ I really mean ‘loved’ . . . Read on!)

1. The opening, the opening, the awesome first ten minute opening of the show.

2. The music, the players, the conductor – I felt like I was maybe, just maybe, in 1933.

3. You know what? It really is a HARD KNOCK LIFE. But at least we can dance about it! I forgot how great that song is and the girls really rock it.

4. I’m not going to say much, and I have to conceal his picture so that the pupperazzi don’t hound him – but there is a dog named Sandy in this musical. An adorably soft, cuddle-tastic doggie.

5. Mrs.. Hannigan (played by Cheryl McMahon) is really really mean. Five seconds after she entered, the school teacher in me wanted to yell, “Be nice to those children, lady!!!” This character is really deplorable and I couldn’t wait for Annie to escape!

The show has so much energy and every song makes you want to sing along (you probably should not . . .). The cast is clearly having a great time together, including “Sandy” the dog. The dances are fun and you want to just get up and join (but you also, probably, should not . . .) My personal favorite song was “We’d Like to Thank You, Herbert Hoover.”

Tonight is the Opening, and I’m bringing my Mom!

“Annie” Tech Week is here!! Opening This FRIDAY!! Homecoming Party too!

I LOVE tech week - the last week before a play opens is my absolute favorite time of the whole process, other than a first rehearsal – my WFT students will tell you I really love that one too!

Both tech week and first rehearsals bring out the very essence of theatre – for better or worse(!) – and this is why I love it:

The sense of community that theatre artists share with their audience – nothing is better than spending a whole week making sure you do the very best of that with your fellow artists and for your audience (WHO’S COMING FRIDAY?! DID I MENTION THAT!!??)

The 150% focus that must be given to the production – whether you want to or not, if you’re involved in a meaningful way with the show, all you will do that whole week is sleep, eat, and do things for the show. Sometimes the sleeping and eating is accidentally forgotten. This usually improves over time in the theatre world.

It’s time to “make it work,” - as Tim Gunn says from “Project Runway.” I love watching and being part of all the final decisions being made. Entrances being changed, “bits” being cut for time or because it turns out they don’t work, magical new things going right in last dress rehearsal and hearing “Keep it,” from the director, I love all of it!

I can’t wait for dress rehearsal! I’ll let you know how it goes!!
